The history of this rare Town and Country can be traced back to 1948, when Pettit Brothers Chrysler was enjoying an unprecedented boom in new car sales.
In 1948, Chrysler's hand-built Town and Country was one of the most expensive American cars on the market. As a result, dealers that ordered the exclusive wood-bodied models were given an option to purchase three additional Chryslers for stock beyond the standard allotment. Considering that new vehicles were still in short supply following WWII, Chrysler's offer was seen as a major incentive.
Recognizing this tactic as an opportunity to generate sales, Pettit Brothers Chrysler ordered three new Town and Countrys. Although the first car was a special order for a customer, the second and third examples were acquired for stock toward the end of the model year. Of the three Town and Countrys ordered new by Pettit Brothers Chrysler in 1948, this handsome Sedan was the last to be sold.
Two years later, the Town and Country Sedan was returned to Pettit Brothers Chrysler when the original owner decided to trade it in for a 1950 New Yorker. As the lightly used Town and Country was in such exceptional condition, Mr. Pettit decided to retain it for his growing collection of classic cars. A lasting reminder of his family's legacy in the automobile business, Mr. Pettit cherished this car for 62 years.
According to Mr. Pettit, this Town and Country Sedan was one of the family's “most enjoyed vehicles ever,” as it combined the unique character of a pre-war classic and the remarkable versatility of a modern automobile. Regularly driven through 1968, the Chrysler currently displays 68,759 miles from new.
Due to its limited use and careful preservation, this Town and Country remains in outstanding unrestored condition. Finished in Catalina Tan, this Town and Country Sedan possesses a marvelous period appearance and genuine character that is most inviting.
