Bentley 1934 3 1/2 Litre Three Position Drophead Coupe by Thrupp and Maberly

Chassis #B75BL
Body # 5880
Engine #X5BD

This lovely drophead coupe was first sold to M.A. Spencer-Nairn of Kircaldy, Fife, Scotland. Mr. Spencer-Nairn was heir to the Michael Nairn linoleum company and the son of Major Sir Robert-Spencer Nairn.  M.A. Spencer-Nairn served in World War II  and was Justice of the Peace in Fife.    In his book, Silver Spoon, Mr. Nairn talks of trading in his Lagonda for this lovely coachbuilt Bentley. Please see excerpts from the book at the end of the webpage.

In 1953,  R.E. Merchant of Derby is shown as owner until  1984 when he sold the car to Howard and Kathie Brown.  Howard Brown was an American working in London.  During 1985-1987, the car was painted and the sub-frame rebuilt as needed, the mechanics were completely gone through to make the car very reliable and a joy to drive.  The upholstery was also redone at this time.

In 1987, the Browns returned to California with the Bentley and  In 2008, Mr. Brown had the car stripped to bare metal so it could be repainted but he died prior to it's completion. The car remained in his wife's ownership until our purchase.

The mechanics are excellent and reflect the work that was completed in England.  Comes with an extensive history including English logbooks, buildsheets, the original handbook issued by Bentley Motor Cars and the service file dating from 1953.

The car was just repainted, the chrome replated, woodwork refinished and the interior redone as needed.
