This stylish two-passenger Rolls-Royce coupe was sold new on September 24, 1926, to AM Baldwin of Los Angeles. Built by the Rolls-Royce factory in Springfield, Massachusetts, it was one of 1703 Silver Ghosts produced there. It is said that the American built Rolls Royce was built to even higher standards than those followed by the parent factory in Derby.
The Silver Ghost chassis was considerably modified to suit American conditions, not least in the adoption of enclosed valve-springs, left-hand steering and a three speed center-change gearbox.
The coupe body was by one of America's most distinguished “old school” coachbuilders, Willoughby of Utica, New York. Active between 1908-1938, Willoughby specialized in semi-custom formal bodies for the leading American luxury marques, including Dusenberg, Marmon and Locomobile. Willoughby delivered this body to the Springfield factory to be finished in-house to Rolls-Royce standards. The coupe was a particularly successful design, combining a sporting profile with that indefinable air of breeding that sets a Rolls Royce apart from lessor cars.
This coupe is very sporty with possibly a one off body style. Skeleton frame ceiling. Three open California owners since new. A factory photo of the car is in the book, "The Rolls-Royce Motorcar" by Bird and Hallows.
